The Martin Luther King Jr. 35th annual birthday commemoration will take place at noon Sunday with a community celebration, program and pot luck at Old Kona Airport Beach Park’s Makeo Pavilion.

The event is free and open to the public. The program will consist of Kealakehe High school, with excerpts from King’s speeches, The Kona Choral Society, Hawaii County Band, The Hoagus Boagus Clown, The Martin Luther King Jr. Choir, hula performances and students from various schools will have art work on display.

Keynote speaker will be poet, Michele Dalton. Dalton, who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and now resides in Hilo, is a self-taught poet, actor singer, writer and performance artist.

The observance of this event in Kailua-Kona was started in 1980 by late Kona resident Frank Bramlett, Mamie Bramlett, and Virginia Halliday. Later Kathy Simmons joined the group. The event has grown since that time to include many volunteers and a committee of 12 people makes the celebration a reality each year.

Attendees are asked to bring a favorite dish to share in the potluck.
